For some years now, argan oil has been a favorite of organic and other skincare companies . In Morocco, it is used for ages, daily, in food but also for skin care.

Argan oil is made from the fruit of the argan nut, a particularly resistant tree that grows only in southwestern Morocco.

It’s the only place in the world where this tree is found. The argan tree produces argan nuts, which are enclosed in a hull. The kernel inside it is used to make argan oil.

Two types of oil can be manufactured

  • Argan oil, used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes, is made from non roasted kernels. The oil is clear and odorless. This oil is the most expensive one.

  • Argan oil, used in food. It has a rather strong taste of hazelnut and almond, it is also darker ( brown) and has a scent: the kernels are slightly roasted. The argan oil can be used in salads…or to form the amlou, a typical Moroccan spread made with Argan oil, almond and honey.

Argan oil composition

Argan oil is mainly composed of unsaturated fatty acids, the best. Thus, it contains more than 40% oleic acid, also known as Omega 9. It is known for its regulating effect on the lipids of our body. It also contains a lot of linoleic acid (Omega 6, more than 35%, ten times more than olive oil), which is beneficial for the skin and its elasticity.

It is also very rich in vitamin E and it’s antioxidant properties, which allow to slow the aging of the skin but also to fight against cardiovascular diseases.

Polyphenols are also included in the composition of this oil. Polyphenols are particularly famous for their health benefits. Argan oil also contains tocopherols and sterols, two compounds also known for their antioxidant properties.

Initially, argan oil was best known for its cosmetic benefits. Little by little, we realized that it also seemed to have beneficial effects on health.

Omega 9 has the power to reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the one that is good for our arteries (HDL). With one obvious cause: the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease.

A study made in 2006 by a Franco-Moroccan team also showed that the risk of myocardial infarction was reduced in rats that consumed argan oil. Some athletes use argan oil to reduce muscle pain.

It would also, to a certain extent, help to fight against obesity, acting as an appetite suppressant if consumed at breakfast. Of course, you have to want to swallow a spoonful of oil on an empty stomach ..
